To my fellow Joe Burrow fantasy-owning commiserators who also cross over as interested observers of golf history, I have terrific news: Sunday, despite No. 9’s toe injury was — as almost every Sunday Scottie Scheffler has played this year has been — historic.
Scheffler won his sixth tournament since March, a lazy little fall affair in Napa where 10 of the 12 U.S. Ryder Cuppers teed it up, and all 10 made the cut, including Ben Griffin who looked a tad shaky on a 6-footer that gave Scheffler [DJ Khaled voice] another one.
This is not notable (outside of the Ryder Cup implications) other than it pads Scottie’s already preposterous 2025 campaign. I proposed last month — when Scottie had four remaining events on his calendar — that he could win one of them and post a top 10 season in the last 40 years (based on Data Golf points).
He’s already won two and still has one to go.
Here’s what I wrote.
How high can Scottie go in 2025? I have him slated for four more tournaments: BMW, Tour Championship, Napa and the Hero. Let’s say he wins one and finishes top 10 in the other three (seems like a safe-ish bet?). I think he can grab 15-20 more DG points, which would put him right around 10th.
Spieth’s 2015 season is probably out of reach.
Me
Spieth’s season is absolutely not out of reach.
Here’s an updated look at the 10 best seasons of the last 40 years. Scheffler has officially entered the top 10 with his win in Napa and is now hunting Spieth and Vijay.
Unfortunately for him, he’s probably running out of tournaments. He likely only has the Hero left on his slate, but it could still be enough to get him up to No. 9.
Last year, in winning the Hero in December, Scottie earned 7.57 DG points. The year before, he won it and got 8.5. Split the difference, and we’re talking about basically being right at Spieth’s 2015 season … which is not even Scottie’s best season in the last two years.
Obviously not everything can be measured in Data Golf points. There are no DG points for carrying your team to a Ryder Cup win at home.
And I probably don’t need to remind you that Scottie got off to a bumpy first month or two because of that pesky wine glass incident over Christmas. Are we a homemade pasta recipe away from him posting another nine-win season?
We obviously can’t know that, but what we can know is this amusing fact: Since Phil Mickelson said that Scottie would not win before the Ryder Cup (see tweet below), Scottie has been absolute napalm.
• 15 tournaments played
• 15 top eight finishes
• 6 victories
• 2 major championships
• 196 under par
• 45/60 rounds in the 60s
• $25.2 million earned
That’s not a Phil subtweet. I’ve made plenty of atrocious predictions (even about Scottie this very year!). It’s more of a nod to what Scottie has done, how quickly he’s done it and how rapidly he’s building one of the great resumes in the history of the sport.
