This time two weeks from right now the U.S. will be up 3-1 on the Europeans.
I absolutely cannot wait.
First a thank you Holderness and Bourne for presenting today’s newsletter.
Their Ryder Cup collection is full of shirts I’m desperate to grab, which double as flags we hope to be flying at Bethpage here in a few weeks.
We’re also hoping to spot some of the first Normal Sport x H&B products out in the wild because, like John Bourne described in Normal Sport No. 244, it never gets old.
I have one that may not have been the very first, but it's the one that's coming to mind. Winged Foot was one of the first few golf shops that we got into.
We were invited to have a drink in the bar after a round of golf with the guy who was hosting us. Somebody walked into the bar wearing one of the shirts that prior season with the Winged Foot logo on it. I just remember being like, “That's really cool.”
I mean, it still is a thrill. It's in the airport now, and you might see it from across the terminal and just like, “All right, that is really something, man. Yeah. Wow.”

You can check out some of the best work Holderness and Bourne has ever done right here.
OK, now onto the news.
1. Can you imagine Dustin Johnson — deep in the process in, like, Milan — trying to find enough game to qualify for the 2027 French Open. The one with Alcaraz and Sinner, not the one with Fleetwood and Hatton.
That’s the equivalent of what Andy Murray is currently working toward in golf.
“I don’t have ambitions of playing in The Open. I want to try and play in like the regional qualifying at some stage,” Murray told reporters on Wednesday, speaking after the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am.

Very normal sport.
2. I wrote up my official stance on The Boys Club this week on The Infirmary. What is The Infirmary? I’m glad you asked. It’s a new portion of our site — a blog, more or less — that will house some of my longer thoughts in an attempt to keep this newsletter much shorter than it has been in the past. We’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
3. SMartin is up there with Jamie Kennedy for me in terms of smart people I want to hear from when it comes to golf. His little nuggets here on Rico Hoey (yes, Rico Hoey) are terrific context for the fall swing.
And this reply…
What kind of odds can I get on Rico Hoey completing the slam by 2027?
4. Another post I wrote on The Infirmary this week: There was a “Patrick Cantlay talking about gin as it relates to the Ryder Cup” (seriously) clip going around last week that bothered me a bit. I’m not saying he’s wrong necessarily. I’m just saying I don’t know if the U.S. has displayed that they totally understand the Ryder Cup.
5. I wrote down some Ryder Cup notes and thoughts on the quotes coming out of Napa and potential pairings that the U.S. seems to be playing around with. For Normal Club members only on The Infirmary right here.
This post will continue for Normal Sport members below, and includes …
One of the more amusing Normal Sport moments of the year.
A note on the ridiculous of modern media.
A habit I’ve been trying to build.
Welcome to the members-only portion of today’s newsletter. I hope you both enjoy it and find it to be valuable to your golf and/or personal life.
6. Another great Normal Sport moment from the last week stemmed from the following, which may have been golf’s version of the Kawahi no-show tree business situation …
That led to some amazing responses.
Like … amazing ones. Imagine showing a non-golf person this tweet!
7. I’m not sure why this marketing email I got promoting a new golf podcast infuriated me as much as it did. But it definitely infuriated me.
Here’s the email.
Mayne went on to say — this is a direct quote — that “as far as I know, this is probably one of the first golf podcasts ever, so Brian, Cooper and I see ourselves as pioneers.”
There seems to be such a desire in the media business for short term success that phrases like this just get thrown around without anyone even knowing or understanding what they mean. Not only a desire but maybe even a need. For it to make a lot of money very quickly.
This may work in the short term. Big names, fancy graphics. Big brands will bite on sponsorships. But in the end — always in the end — it always fails because the attention isn’t there. It never lasts. I would bet all of the money in the Normal Sport business account (to be fair, not a ton!) that this podcast won’t be around in four years.
Why? Media businesses demand attention, and our attention as humans is drawn toward things that are real and meaningful. It is difficult for something to be real and meaningful when the declaration out of the gate is that it’s going to be the greatest thing of all time.
Just take your time. Go slow. Wait. Be patient. If it’s meaningful it will work.
I think I might be talking to myself now so let’s go ahead and move on.
8. I have tried (and often failed but sometimes succeeded) to make this a habit. There is nothing better than receiving this from someone else. Therefore, I know it is important to be on the giving side of it as well.
Given that the Ryder Cup is all I think about right now, please excuse me while I go DM Gin-X, which is the only way I will be referring to the Cantlay/Xander pairing from now on.
Thank you for reading our handcrafted, algorithm-free newsletter about golf. We put everything we have into everything we write, which is why they are frequently 1,184 words long like this one.
While we do use digital tools that help us find information, everything you read and consumed was created from scratch by two humans who are absolutely obsessed with the game.
If you ever want to support our business, you can buy some Norman merch here or pass along our site to your golf group chat and get them involved in all this nonsense as well.
